Antivirus Magnate John McAfee found DEAD in Spanish prison, after court approves extradition to US
McAfee, 75, was found in his cell at Sant Esteve Sesrovires prison on Wednesday evening, Spanish media reported, citing an official statement from the Department of Justice. Prison guards and paramedics intervened and tried to rehabilitate it, but to no avail, the department said.
Investigators have been sent to prison to investigate the cause of his death, but "everything indicates it could be suicide," the department said.(ads2)
Earlier on Wednesday, a Spanish court ruled to allow him to be sent to the United States on tax evasion charges between 2014 and 2018, which could land him in prison for up to 30 years. U.S. authorities also had public lawsuits pending against McAfee about $ 13 trillion in cryptocurrency programs.
McAfee was arrested in Spain in October 2020 and jailed "in a plane crash" pending his return trial.
In a communication letter dated June 16, 2021, which turned out to be the last one, he revealed that millions stored in cryptocurrency had been “spent” by his partners, who said they had left him in fear.
"I have nothing. Still, I have no regrets," he wrote.
Best known for his anonymous anti-virus software, McAfee actually resigned from the company in 1994 and did other alternatives, but severely attacked his fortune during the 2008 financial crisis. He lived in Belize for a while, but left in 2013 after being accused - falsely, he said - of killing a neighbor.
McAfee also made two bids for US presidency, in 2016 and 2020. Both times, he lost the Libertarian Party election.
