Benigno Aquino, former president of the Philippines, has died at the age of 61 after being hospitalized in Manila.

"It is with great sadness that I read this morning about the passing of former president Benigno Aquino," High Court Judge Marvic Leonen, who was appointed by Aquino in 2012, said in a statement. “It has been an honor for me to work with him. You will miss him. ”

Popularly known as Noynoy, he became president from 2010 to 2016 after rising with a wave of public support following the death of his mother in 2009, respected "people power" leader Corazon Aquino, who was president himself from 1986 to 1992.

His father-in-law, a manager who strongly opposed Ferdinand Marcos' law, was killed on his way home from a political exile in 1983. The massacre shocked the nation and helped bring Marcos to power in 1986 as "People power", bringing in power. for his mother's presidency.

Aquino was a single son and worked in the family sugar business before starting his political career in 1998. He was the third member of parliament between 1998 and 2007, representing the sugar growing province of Tarlac in northern Manila.

He was still wounded in a battle when he attacked his soldiers in 1987 against his mother, in which he was shot five times and three of his bodyguards were killed.

Aquino's six-year term in office was not a problem, including his fifth year in office in which 44 commanders were assassinated in a campaign to exterminate a wanted Malaysian soldier.

In November 2013, Aquino was also forced to deal with the damage left by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded. A typhoon ravaged towns and villages in central Philippines, killing more than 6,000 people.

While there are some benefits to fighting corruption, his image has been tarnished by the mismanagement of public funds for that year.
