At least 32 people were killed in a road accident in the Mugu district far west of Mugu when a car veered 300 meters from the road, police said. The road back to the passenger bus to Gamgadhi, the Mugu regional capital from Nepalgunj was loaded with immigrant workers and a few students who were on their way home to celebrate Dashain.
“The incident happened around 12.30pm and 22 people died on the spot. We are confident that another ten lives have been lost, six hours since the incident. We are afraid that the death toll could rise, ”Jeevan Lamicchane, an inspector at the Karnali provincial police office.
According to the official, rescue operations were carried out on the cliffs with the help of the Nepalese army and their pilot and a private jet were used to rescue the injured. “The bus seems to have moved from the road down a cliff to about 300 meters. We speculated that the brake failure was the reason for that. We are still working, ”said Rom Bahadur Mahat, Mugu district official.
Thirty-nine people were on the bus. Tuesday's incident is the first major accident in the most inaccessible region Nepal had to deal with after it was connected to a national highway nearly a decade ago.
