WB CM Mamata Benerjee ordered probe over Pegasus Controversy

Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal becomes first State to order probe over Pegasus Controversy under Mamata Banerjee's rule. The Pegasus Controversy had been strike the nation on July 18 by International organization, that is one night before Monsoon Session of Parliament. WB CM Mamata Banerjee stated in her statement that, "West Bengal has ordered an investigation into the Pegasus awareness line that has been rocking the nation since July 18, becoming the first state to do so."

“Cabinet approved the appointment of a commission of inquiry comprising former High Court Judge, Justice (retd) Mb Lokur and retired Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Justice (retd) Jyotirmay Bhattacharya exercising the powers conferred on him by section 3 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952. in law, employment, surveillance, recording, etc. of the cell phones of various people in the West Bengal province, ”Bananjee told reporters at the secretary general's office before leaving Delhi.

Pegasus' line erupted last Sunday ahead of the start of the current parliamentary session after an international investigative body reported that India was among the countries using Israeli software company NSO Group hacking company Pegasus to target politicians, journalists and activists.

"Last week, we thought the center would launch an investigation, which is being considered by a high court for residents who believe in it. But when we saw that the center did not care, we decided to appoint a commission of inquiry consisting of two retired judges.

“When a person is asleep he must be awakened. This is a small step. We hope this will awaken others. This is approved in the cabinet today. We will now ask the two retired people to join in and start an investigation, ”she stated.

With the most aggressive malware, Pegasus can turn on the phone's camera and microphone, and access the data on the device, making it a spy in the pocket.

Banerjee, who had long wanted her phone to be tapped, allegedly last week used spyware to hack Prasant Kishor's cell phone and record the entire meeting with him ahead of a recent elections.

CM Mamata banerjee and her nephew, Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee, have also reportedly appeared on a list of Pegasus software based from Israel.

The BJP launched a counter-attack saying it was nothing but Mamata Banerjee's sentence and that no commission of inquiry set up by the state could provide results.

“It seems to be a political concept with no legal support and no support for the Indian legal system. Since taking office in 2011 his government has so far set up countless commissions using public funds. However, none of these reports were published or tabled in the Legislature. Earlier, many political leaders suspected that their calls had been made by the TMC government. Will the commission prove this too? ”Said Jay Prakash Majumdar, BJP vice-president of West Bengal.

In coming days, CM Banerjee is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of non-BJP political leaders. "I will go to Delhi for two or three days ... I have asked to be nominated by the Prime Minister, and he has given me time. I will try again to meet with the President. Separately, several political leaders have asked to meet with me. I can try to be flexible and provide as much as two to three days," Bananjee said on Thursday past when announcing his trip.
