The number of children born in the country dropped to 840,832 by 2020 which is less than 24,407 compared to 2019. It is the first time that Japan has recorded less than 900,000 births since the country began keeping records.

Government records also show that this year the birth rate could be even worse as the number of newborns dropped by 9.2 percent from January to March as the country struggles with the epidemic.

The birth rate in the country has been declining since 1973 when the mother's age also increased in recent years giving birth to a child between the ages of 30 and 34 at a record high of 303,434 in the middle of that period the first child is 30.7 years old.

The Japanese capital Tokyo recorded the lowest birth rate to 1.13.

The country has the highest number of older people in the world with a decrease in the number of people seen in 2011. According to a report by the EU Parliament on Japanese population at least 28 percent of the population aged 65 and over and the country is failing to raise its interest rate to meet the rate of change in its workforce.

Japan has been described as "the oldest population" in an EU report with at least one in three mothers in Japan aged 65. In 2017 there were 2 million people over the age of 90 in the country and the number is expected to rise to 440,000 by 2050, according to a report and about 88% of Japanese people are women.

In 2005, Japan reached the lowest fertility rate at 1.26 and then rose, however, in 2019 before the epidemic dropped again to 1.36. When the epidemic hit the country in 2020, pregnancy in Japan hit a record low of 11.4 percent from last year until July 2020.

An EU report points out that one of the main reasons for low birth rates is the fact that men get fewer job opportunities that affect their prospects for marriage since a Japanese woman is looking for men with stable jobs.
