Delhi Metro authorities completed civil work on the 'missing' section of the Pink Line - between Mayur Vihar Pocket 1- Trilokpuri Sanjay Jheel - by installing steel girders instead of concrete girders to connect the two ends of the Pink Line corridor, resulting in a Single Metro stretch between Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar of 58.6 km.
This metro corridor - which will be extended from Majlis Park to Maujpur under the Delhi Metro Phase - IV project, will cover a distance of about 70 km, making it the longest single metro corridor in the country.
Metro authority Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has installed a total of 40 steel girders in 10 spans for the 290 meters long Mayur Vihar Pocket 1- Trilokpuri Sanjay Jheel section, which was missing earlier. Due to this metro trains were running on two different sections of Pink Line which are presently Majlis Park- Mayur Vihar I and Shiv Vihar-Trilokpuri section.
Delhi Metro Pink Line 'Missing' Link: Why was the construction delayed?
A senior Metro official told NDTV that the construction work on the missing link between Mayur Vihar Pocket 1- Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake got delayed due to land acquisition and rehabilitation issues. An encumbrance-free land was not available in this area, and the metro authorities acquired the required land after due process of law.
The houses and residents affected by the Metro line were rehabilitated, following which the DRMC started the construction work.
Construction or civil work started on this metro section in early 2020, however, speed was repeatedly interrupted due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown. Steel girders ranging in length from 16 to 38 meters were installed and the casting of the deck slabs was completed in April 2021, just before the second wave of the pandemic.
Metro authorities used steel girders instead of traditional concrete girders as the manufacture of concrete would require the establishment of a casting yard. Setting up a casting yard would not have been possible for a small part in a short period of time. For this reason, steel girders were installed on the section.
Delhi Metro Pink Line: For how long will it work as a single corridor?
The civil work between Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake section has been completed and track laying and other ancillary works have started. Overhead Electrification (OHE) work is also in progress in this section.
The track laying work is expected to be completed by the end of this month and preliminary trials are expected to begin after that. This section will become operational for services immediately after obtaining mandatory clearance from the concerned authorities. A DMRC official told the press that the entire process is likely to take around two-three months.
Delhi Metro Pink Line: How will it benefit commuters?
Once the construction is completed between Mayur Vihar Pocket 1- Trilokpuri Sanjay Jheel, it will connect the two ends of the Pink Line and provide direct connectivity to remote areas in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Important transport hubs like Anand Vihar ISBT, Nizamuddin Railway Station, Anand Vihar Railway Station, Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, Delhi Cantt. Stations and markets like Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, and Dilli Haat-INA will get direct metro connectivity through the Pink Line.
In addition, after the completion of Delhi Metro Phase IV - which will make the Pink Line the longest operational metro corridor in India, it will also become the only ring corridor of the Metro in the country, according to DMRC.
