Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved to procure the Oxygen care system in Rs 322.5 crores developed by the Defense Research and Developmental Organization. The cost will be paid through the PM-CARES fund.
This step is very well approached as the country is currently suffering through a severe shortage of Oxygen since the beginning of the Second Wave in the Country. This unit is designed to optimize the consumption of oxygen based on the SpO2 reading of the patients and as a result that increases the utility of the oxygen cylinders.
The System comes in two different variants: Manual, and automatic. Around 100,000 manual and 50,000 automatic oxygen systems and non-rebreather masks (NRB) will be available. Non-recurring masks are attached to a water bag that allows the patient to inhale only fresh oxygen. A patient using NRB cannot smell anything and only exhales. Non-recurring mask covers 70 to 100% oxygen and increases consumption from one cylinder by 30 to 40%.
“The threshold SpO2 value for initiating flow from the system can be adjusted once and a display will then continuously keep monitoring the SpO2 levels of the patients,” DRDO stated in the statement.
Therefore, this step by the Government of India looks promising as the government is trying hard to eliminate the difficulties existing within the system. The major problem here is the persisting oxygen crisis in the country which began since the second wave of the Pandemic. These oxygen care units will boost up the functioning of the healthcare system in the Country.
