President Joe Biden has strongly defended Israel, a day after the announcement of a ceasefire against Hamas, and said there would be no peace before the region acknowledged Israel's right to exist.

Biden praised peace between Israel and Hamas after an 11-day war that left more than 200 people dead. The war, which led to the casualties of Palestinians in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, led some Democrats to pressure Biden to take the reins of power against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
The president, however, praised what he called the "peaceful" vision of his superiors in helping to end the Hamas rocket attacks in Israel, as well as Israeli airlines in Gaza.
Administrative officials have seized about 80 calls with their counterparts in the Middle East, according to the White House, including six calls between Biden and Netanyahu and talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. As a signal to Democrats seeking to halt arms sales in Israel, Biden said he was willing to help "re-fill" Israel's Iron Dome defense system used to stop Hamas rockets, which were fired into Israel.
