Nepal's Parliament dissolved by President, new election expected in November

Nepal entered a new political crisis on Saturday when President Bidya Devi Bhandari dissolved parliament and held general elections in November amid outbreaks of COVID-19.

The shocking announcement comes after a statement by the president stating that the caretaker Prime Minister K. Sharma Oli, or opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba was able to convince many of them to form a new government on Friday's deadline set for Bandari.

"The President dissolved the House of Representatives and ordered that the first general election be held on November 12 and the second on November 19," the president said in a statement.

He said the decision was made on the recommendation of Cabinet led by Acting Prime Minister Oli, which dissolved Parliament in December 2020 and put an end to several weeks of protests and the Supreme Court reversed the unconstitutional decision in February.

It was not immediately noticed by political parties in the latest move.

Nepal is fighting a second wave that kills the epidemic and reports an average of 8,207 new infections each day.
