Oscars 2021: Chloe Zhao, Ann Roth, Emerald Fennel; women create history on Sunday

 History was made on Sunday night as Chloe Zhao became the first Asian woman to nominate the prestigious Best Director of ‘Nomadland’ at the Oscars. It was the first Oscar for Zhao, 39, who starred in real life with actor Frances McDormand to show the lives of American adults who went from work to work trying to make a living. Only two women won the best director in the 93-year history of the Academy Awards. Kathryn Bigelow took home the award in 2010 for the war competition 'The Hurt Locker. '

Zhao was competing this year with the director of 'Promise Young Woman' Emerald Fennell, which was the first time two women have been nominated in the category at the same time. See the full list of winners here

Fennel also made history on Sunday night as she became the boxing woman to win the Oscar for Original Screenplay for the film 'Promising Young Woman'. The films portray Carey Mulligan as a woman seeking revenge for the death of her best friend, who was a victim of rape. Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne, and Connie Britton who starred in the movie.

And it was a historic night for fashion designer Ann Roth, who won Best Costume Designer Oscar for 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'. At 89, Roth became the oldest prize in the award.
