53 Navy sailors presumed dead after sunken Indonesia submarine found

The scan detected the submarine at 850 metres deep sea level – well beyond its survivable limits.

Indonesian officials say the wreckage of a stranded submarine was found after the ship sank as hopes of rescuing 53 sailors on board sank on Saturday.

The items found included a lubricant and a torpedo protection device, said Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto.

"Artifacts found near the submarine are believed to be part of the ship," he said. "These things would not have come out of this submarine without pressure."

The submarine - one of five Indonesian ships - disappeared on Wednesday during a torpedo exercise on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali.

Navy chief Yudo Margono said on Saturday rescuers found several items, including parts of a torpedo straightener, a bottle of oil believed to be used to fill the periscope with oil, and places of worship from the sea.

"With the true evidence we have found to be believed to have come from this ocean, we have now moved from the sub miss category to sub sunk," said Margono.

Indonesia had previously considered a submarine that went missing in Bali as missing. But now officials have announced that the submarine has sunk.

There is no sign of health

Officials also said the supply of oxygen to its 53 employees ended Saturday morning.

Margono said the scan found the 850-meter (2,788-meter) ship, which is much beyond the limits it could have survived. The submarine is designed to withstand depths of up to 500 meters (1,640 meters).

“If it is an explosion it will be in pieces. Cracks occurred slowly in some parts as they dropped from 300 meters to 400 meters to 500 meters.… If there was an explosion, it would have been heard with sonar, ”said Margono, adding that no bodies had been found so far.

The military said it was preparing to "take off" the ship.

“The submarine is located at a much deeper level than the depth of the boat. There will be no survivors at all, assuming no one on board was able to escape before it sank, ”said Collin Koh, a researcher at Singapore's S Rajaratnam School of International Studies focusing on maritime and marine safety.

"The eviction of the people they are talking about, I think they are referring to the discovery of the garbage in the end of any submarine that can be rescued, in the hope that at least the remains of the crew will be returned," Koh said. told Al Jazeera.

There are no signs of life on the submarine, but family members are optimistic.

Berda Asmara, the wife of Secent Sergeant Guntur Ari Prasetya, said she still hoped her husband would survive.

"Nothing is certain yet. The important thing is that we do not stop praying and hope that everyone will return home safe and sound," he said.

The ship was designed to run tests when you asked for permission to dive. Lost communication recently.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered all efforts to locate the submarine and called on Indonesians to pray for the safe return of the crew.

The search focused on the immediate vicinity of its final dive where oil was discovered.

The cause of the disappearance is not yet clear. The navy said the power failure would leave the submarine unable to carry out emergency procedures to recover.

The German-based KRI Nanggala-402 diesel has been operating in Indonesia since 1981 and was in charge of 49 workers and three pilots as well as its commander, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense said.

A young retired naval commander, Frans Wuwung, who was in charge of the maritime chamber, said he believed the ship could be electrocuted.

“I hope the brothers will be found safe and sound because they are experts and know what they are doing. But a ship can withstand a maximum depth of 300 feet [300 m], perhaps 500 feet [500 m]. More than that and I would not dare to comment. May God bless them. I am very sorry, ”he said
