The dispute involved a "disgusting and contradictory" post by a user on Instagram, as filed in court by petitioner Aditya Singh Deshwal.

Facebook, the owner of Instagram, has informed the Delhi High Court to remove any questionable content about Hindu gods and goddesses posted by a user on the platform. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, representing Facebook, also informed the high court that in view of the complaint lodged by the applicant, copies of the complaint would no longer be distributed to any third party unrelated.

The dispute involved a "disgusting and contradictory" post by a user on Instagram, as filed in court by petitioner Aditya Singh Deshwal. The petitioner further stated that the content contained reflects the offensive language written by Hindu deities, as well as their "dirty" independence by cartoons and drawings. He also demanded directions on Instagram to keep all the details related to the account involved so that this could be presented in court to expose those behind these "undesirable things".

Deshwal, represented by attorney general G Tushar Rao and attorney Ayush Saxena, also demanded the removal of content from the photo and video sharing platform in advance.

Earlier, Manish Singh, a Delhi resident and a member of the Baratiya Janata Party (BJP), had filed a complaint with Delhi police over the posts, accusing Instagram of "harming the feelings" of Hindus. In his complaint, Singh said the GIF was created "for the sole purpose of inciting the followers of the Hindu community and, in the process, to promote discord, hatred and hostility."
Urging Delhi police to open a case against the CEO of Instagram and others under sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Singh threatened to protest outside the Instagram office if the content was not retracted and apologized.
