Nuclear Warheads stockpile still Growing, International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reveals

The overall number of nuclear warheads in global military stockpiles appears to be increasing this year, a new finding released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reveals.

The total number of nuclear warheads in the world's military supply appears to be rising this year, according to a new finding published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Reuters reported on Monday.

"Nine nuclear-weapon states, such as the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of (North Korea), collectively owned, it was estimated that 13,080 nuclear weapons in early 2021. It was a drop of 13, and 400 SIPRI estimated in these states, they were in early 2020, " SIPRI said.

However, SIPRI research shows that this trend seems to be stopping.

"Despite the decline in the total number, it is estimated that the number of nuclear weapons currently deployed with operational forces has increased to 3,825, and last year to 3,720," the institute said.

According to SIPRI, the US and Russia continue to reduce their nuclear arsenals in 2020, but both are estimated to have had about 50 nuclear warheads in operational use in early 2021 compared to the previous year.

"Both countries have deployed strategic nuclear forces under the 2010 Treaty on Measures for Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START Treaty), although the convention does not limit the total stocks of nuclear warheads," the Security Service said.

The Institute noted that China is upgrading and expanding its weapons and equipment, along with India and the United States.

In February, Russia and the United States agreed to extend the New Start Treaty to five years without renegotiating the terms. The convention expires on December 5, 2026-it is the only arms control treaty between the two countries that still remains in force.

The Convention of the Parties has a nuclear arsenal of 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 800 launchers and about 700 missiles. Both the US and Russia met in the central framework of the New START Treaty in 2018 and have remained on or under them ever since.

According to the White House, on Wednesday in Geneva, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden will discuss a number of bilateral issues related to strategic stability and arms control.
