6 kgs of Uranium Recovered from smugglers in Bokaro, Jharkhand, 7 arrested: Police

At least 6 Kgs of Uranium was recovered from the possession of 7 miscreants, arrested by a special police team of Bokaro police officers in Jharkhand after raiding various parts of the city on Thursday. Police were briefing on a report of a group involved in illegal uranium smuggling.

"The police team raided the area at the behest of the Superintendent of Police, who obtained information that criminals were involved in the uranium trade. During the raid, seven criminals were arrested and six uranium kilos were found in his possession," Bokaro police said in a statement.

The findings of the perpetrators have been sent for testing. Uranium is a highly radioactive substance and is used in nuclear facilities. Police said the suspects, who were allegedly part of a national gang involved in the illegal trade, were looking for customers and had set a price of Rs 50 lakhs. According to sources, a kilogram of uranium traded for $ 18 on the world market.

Those arrested are identified as Bapi Da known as Bapi Chandra, Anil Singh, Deepak Kumar, Krishna Kant, Hare Ram Sharma, Mahavir Mahto and Pankaj Mahto. Police say they are residents in different parts of the district. The discovery of unlicensed uranium in India is illegal and violates the Atomic Energy Act, 1962.

It is not yet clear how the suspect found the object, such as the uranium-like substance. During the interrogation, the suspects had been giving elaborate answers when asked how they found uranium. In one case, they claimed to have found it in a man from West Bengal and in another case they claimed to have found it in Giridih and elsewhere.
Two men arrested in Mumbai have 7-kg of natural uranium worth Rs 21 crore

This is not the first time that uranium has been seized from ordinary people in recent times. In early May 2021, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) seized two men with 7 kgs of natural uranium costing Rs 21 crore in Mumbai.

The detainees were identified as Jigar Jayesh Pandya and Abu Tahir Afzal Hussain Choudhary. ATS has received a tip-off that the suspects are looking for a potential buyer to sell a large stockpile of highly radioactive material. A trap was set and both were arrested.
