U.S.A. based medical giants Pfizer and Moderna have informed the Delhi government that they "they will deal with the Central government" only and not sell Covid-19 vaccines individually in any case to the states, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday. This comes at a time when government immunization centers in Delhi are closed to those under 45 due to unavailability of doses and the government is trying to impose orders on Indian and foreign producers to replenish their shares and reopen all facilities.
“We have spoken to Pfizer and Moderna for vaccines, and both the manufacturers have refused to sell directly to us. They have said they will deal with the Central government. We appeal to the Centre to import vaccines and distribute to the states,” Kejriwal stated to the reporters on Monday. His statement also came a day after Punjab said Moderna had refused to sell the vaccines directly to the state.
“In November 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the vaccine manufacturing plant of Serum Institute of India. The Indian government pumped in money to increase production only last month whereas the US started investing in production of vaccines in March, 2020,” Sisodia stated in the statement.
The minister said he hoped the center would speed up the purchase of vaccines to avoid a situation where even those who received their first dose were made to take the drugs and due to excessive delays in getting second jabs.
Thus, in these conditions Central government needs to speed up the purchase of the Covid-19 vaccines for the as the country needs to vaccinate the majority before the arrival of the third wave of the Pandemic. The politics on this should also be set apart and all the governments need to work together against the infection. This statement by the US based giants can be treated as their private or major policy which each country have to respect.
