“Cyclone Tauktae, which triggered wind speed up to 220 kmph, had destroyed crops in Amreli, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Junagadh and Botad districts of the Saurashtra region. It had also affected crops in South Gujarat districts of Navsari, Surat, Valsad and Bharuch,” Rupani stated after the core committee meeting held to resolve the issue by alotting the relief fund to the affected farmers due to the massive storm.
“Horticulture and summer crops were destroyed in 2 lakh hectares in 86 talukas of these nine districts. The government had initiated a survey (for damage assessment) which will be completed by Thursday,” CM Rupani stated.
One of the strongest hurricanes to hit the west coast in recent times, Tauktae, which fell off the coast of Gujarat on May 17 and caused strong winds and rain, destroyed crops on 2 lakh hectares of 86 talukas spread across nine state districts, according to official figures.
Under the Rupees 500 crore package, the government has decided to provide ₹1 lakh financial assistance per hectare (up to 2 hectares) to farmers who cultivate their completely removed crops.
If the damage is more than 33 percent, ₹30,000 per hectare will be given to such farmers by 2 hectares, Rupani said.
Large-scale agricultural crops that have been devastated by hurricanes are mango, chikoo, lemon, coconut and guava. For summer crops, farmers who face more than 33 percent of the damage will be compensated by ₹ 20,000 per hectare (up to 2 hectares), he stated.
The amount of compensation will be credited directly to the bank account of the beneficiary farmers a week after the completion of the study on May 27, CM stated.
Thus, the step taken by the Gujarat government is really very appreciating and shows that every state which is affected by any storm need to take proper measure to heal itself and its people.
