Pope Francis on Thursday praised India's "tireless" medical work during the second wave of coronavirus that has expanded the country's healthcare facilities beyond measure. Pope urged health officials to remain steadfast in his message to India.

In a message addressed to a conference of Catholic bishops in India, the Bishop offered "heartfelt unity and spiritual closeness to all the people of India".

"My thoughts extend to all the sick and their families, those who care for them, and especially those who are grieving the loss of loved ones," she said.

"I think of many doctors, nurses, hospital staff, ambulance drivers and those who work tirelessly to meet the needs of their brothers and sisters immediately.

"With great joy I implore all of God's gifts of patience, strength and peace."

India has seen patients die even on roads outside hospitals due to a lack of beds and oxygen.

The country on Thursday reported about 4,000 people dying in Covid-19 and more than 412,000 infections - both new records - giving hope that a catastrophic attack had just subsided after a few days of declining prices.
