Central government allotted around 150 GPS-enabled
ventilators provided under the PM Cares Trust Fund has become operational at
the Sherar Patel Covid Center in Delhi. The Covid Care Center, run by the Delhi
government and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, went into operation on April 26,
as Capital saw the highest rate of the second wave of the epidemic.
An application for 150 ventilators on loan for a period
of six months for critically ill patients at the Covid Care Center was raised
by the ITBP DG, SS Deswal.
"Very limited manufacturing of ventilators was
taking place in the country and most of the suppliers abroad were not in a
position to make supplies of ventilators in large quantities to India. That is
when the local manufacturers were encouraged to produce “Make in India"
Ventilators to address the huge projected demand of the country and orders
placed on them. Many of them were first time manufacturers of the
ventilators," Centre stated in the official statement
Since the outbreak in April 2020, the center has been
purchasing medical equipment, including ventilators, which has been distributed
to the Union Territories and states.
Among the reports of ventilators purchased by the Center
for not functiong properly, the center recently noted that when the epidemic
broke out last year, available equipment was available in very limited numbers
in public hospitals.
The Center also clarified that detailed instructions and
guidelines have been issued to all ventilator users regarding the use and
maintenance of ventilators.
