Krishna Khairnar, a senior scientist, NEERI-based environmental virology cell in Nagpur, said the experiment was suitable for rural and ethnic areas as it had minimal infrastructure needs.
NEERI scientist expects this method of testing to be useful in rural and national areas where infrastructure needs are a hindrance and trained technicians are not available.
The Saline Gargle RT-PCR method is fast, comfortable and friendly. The sample can be made by the patient and the results are made within three hours, Khairnar said. This method of collecting and processing the sample saves costs and eliminates the need for RNA extraction infrastructure, he said.
“Collection methods such as nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab collection require technical expertise. They also consume time. In contrast, the Saline Gargle RT-PCR method uses a simple collection tube filled with a salt solution. The patient rubs the solution and cleans it inside the tube. This sample in the collection tube is taken to the laboratory where it is stored at room temperature, in a special buffer solution prepared by NEERI. An RNA template is produced when this solution is heated, which is also used for RT-PCR, ”said Khiarnar.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation has already given permission to continue this method of testing in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
