'Building was legitimate target', says Israeli PM Netanyahu, defends media house attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday defended Israeli attacks on the Gaza tower H-Al-Jazeera and the offices of The Associated Press. He called the attack a "legal attack". His remarks will draw criticism from Israel, which is already experiencing global warming.

"The intelligence office of the Palestinian terrorist organization (lived) in that building that created and planned the attacks on the Israeli people," Netanyahu told CBS News.

"So that's what we wanted to do legally. I can tell you that we have taken every precaution to ensure that no casualties are, in fact, no deaths."

On Saturday (May 15), a Israeli air raid destroyed a Gaza building occupied by the media offices.

The attack has sent alarms around the world that are already expressing concern about the growing Israeli-Palestinian violence. The attacks on media houses have created a response even in the US, Israel's strongest coalition. The US on Saturday called on Israel to protect journalists.

On Sunday, powerful statements came from the Israeli camp. An Israelite military official said that Hamas had “defeated” Israel.

"Hamas has badly seen the power of our response," said Aviv Kochavi, the army chief, who said Gaza had been tolerating bombings in an unprecedented way.

'Organized violence', Israel said at the UN

Israel suspects Hamas violence was 'premeditated'

"It is fully organized by Hamas to gain political power," said Israeli diplomat Gilad Erdan. He said this during a session called by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the issue.

Hamas said its rocket strike in Israel was the culmination of an Israeli invasion of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, amid growing tensions over Palestinian family evictions.

"Do you really believe that this building dispute is what caused Hamas to launch this attack on the Israeli people?" Said Erdan.
