Vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech on Thursday announced that it is continuing to increase production capacity to produce more than 200 million Covaxin doses annually, taking the total number of vaccines produced annually to close to 1 billion.
These additional doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be made at Chiron Behring Vaccines, a fully owned company of Bharat Biotech in Ankleshwar in Gujarat. "The company plans to produce 200 million doses of Covaxin annually from GMP facilities that are already operational to produce vaccines based on Inactivated Vero Cell Platform Technology, under stringent level of GMP and biosafety," a statement from the Hyderabad-based company said. It further added that additional doses will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.
The company said it had already sent a number of Covaxin production lines to its facilities in Hyderabad and Bangalore. The addition of the Chiron Behring facility will successfully upgrade up to 10 million a year, "with its own established campuses specialized in maintaining inactivated viral vaccines under the highest level of biosafety," the company stated in a statement.
Earlier on April 20, the director of biotechnology had announced that it was increasing its production capacity to produce 700 million doses of vaccine annually. Currently, the company produces about 120 million doses annually. The Union government on April 16 also announced it would help double India's first vaccine production 'in India' Covid-19 on May-June, from the current 10 million doses a month, and with the aim of helping produce to 100 million per month by September.
Therefore, the Indian based companies are trying hard to eliminate the virus from the country by boosting the production capacity. The main aim is to vaccinate maximum people so that the coming third wave of the pandemic couldn’t able to make the disastrous situation as like as the second wave of the pandemic.
