TSPs with OEMs Nokia, Samsung, C-DOT given Permission for 5G trails.
The Department of Communications (DoT) on Tuesday gave permission to Telecom Service Provider (TSPs) providers to conduct testing of 5G technology.
This officially leaves out Chinese companies like Huawei and ZTE in the 5G race in India.
“TSPs applicants include Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd. and MTNL. These TSPs have the equipment manufacturers and technology providers Nokia, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT, ”the Department of Communications said in a statement. In addition, Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd. it will also perform tests using its native technology.
The probationary period is six months, which includes a two-month procurement period. "Permits have been granted by DoT in terms of priorities and technical partners identified by TSPs themselves," he said.
Each TSP will be required to conduct tests in rural and urban areas and in addition to urban planning so that the benefits of 5G technology increase across the country and not limited to urban areas, the statement said.
Citing that TSPs were encouraged to conduct tests using 5Gi technology in addition to existing 5G technology, the statement said the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) also approved 5Gi technology, which was sponsored by India, as it helps to achieve greater access to towers. -5G and radio networks. 5Gi technology was developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), Center for Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) and IIT Hyderabad.
According to the Department, the objectives of conducting 5G tests include testing the features of 5G spectrum distribution in the Indian context, modeling and testing of selected equipment and vendors, testing of traditional technologies, testing of applications such as tele-medicine, tele-education, taxpayer dislike we see, virtual reality and drone-based agricultural monitoring, and testing of 5G phones and devices.
With 5G technology data, download rates are expected to be ten times higher than that of 4G while providing more than three times the efficiency. The trials will be non-commercial and the data generated during the test will be stored in India, according to the statement.
In addition to the provision of testing spectrum in various fields, TSPs are also allowed to use their existing spectrum to perform experiments, the statement adds.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), in a statement, welcomed the continuation of the 5G trial. “It will promote the Environmental Research and Development [R&D] program to develop new programs designed for commercial needs. It will enable TSPs to validate 5G technology and use cases such as IoT and Industry 4.0. We hope that the government will reconsider the industry's call to review 5G prices, ”said Lt General Dr. SP Kochhar, Director-General, COAI.
