With Hurricane Yaas predicted to descend on the east coast on May 26 and possibly hit parts of Odisha and West Bengal, the Indian Navy on Tuesday said it had intensified its rescue and relief efforts.

"INS Netaji Subhas is leading the Navy Indian relief efforts in West Bengal and is closely cooperating with the West Bengal State Government in the preparations for Hurricane Yaas, which is expected to cross between the coast of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26," the Indian Navy said.

As part of the preparation, Navy Diving Teams and five flood relief teams were deployed, including special Navy personnel with associated equipment and boats to be imported.

One diving team and two flood relief teams, set up in Digha and Frazerganj, both in West Bengal on May 23 and May 24 respectively.

One flood relief team has been waiting at Diamond Harbor, to be redistributed as needed, in a short period of time. These teams are equipped to do the work of evacuating the injured / homeless, logging / logging operations, and distribution of relief supplies, as may be required by local district authorities.

In addition, the Indian Navy has also placed Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies for about 500 people at its Depot Center in Kolkata, for distribution next if necessary, after the Hurricane. Four Indian Navy vessels, loaded with HADR cargo, medical teams and other diving teams, will also follow the hurricane closely and be available for further assistance.

Marine helicopters from INS ships, Medium-Range Maritime Patrol (MRMP) flights to Visakhapatnam and Long Range Maritime Patrol (LRMP) flights to Arrakkonam (Tamil Nadu) are also expected to be dispatched shortly after the storm and evacuation. and the spirit of relief, subject to requests from the State Government, as required.

Meanwhile, India's Department of Meteorology (IMD) today predicted that a strong Yaas storm would escalate into "the strongest hurricane" in the next 12 hours.

"The powerful Yaas east-east bay of the Bay of Bengal moved northwest at a speed of about 9 kmph six hours ago and then landed at 9 UTC on May 24 across the Bay of Bengal," the IMD said. a brief report.

Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged residents of the Odisha coastal region to co-operate with local authorities and relocate to storm shelters. Speaking to the people of the state yesterday, the CM also asked them to follow the principles of Covid-19 and wear two masks.
