 The whole world is praying for India and its people today, said American civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson on Wednesday, reassuring Mahatma Gandhi that the country would win the war against the epidemic.

Chicago Civil Rights Leader Rev. Jesse Jackson was in town here to urge Biden officials to donate 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in India. At a press conference here, a prominent American human rights leader said he had already taken up the issue with President Joe Biden and Deputy President Kamala Karris.

"The whole world today is praying for India," he said, expressing his solidarity with the people of India.

The conference was aimed at Indian American American leaders. In his address, Rev Jackson called for more fundraising for Indians and Indians affected by COVID-19.

"We have to ask for a global vaccination. We need respiratory equipment, medicines and vaccines right now," he said.

Prominent Indian and American community leader Dr Bharat Barai thanked Rev. Jackson for his initiative. "Vaccination is the right thing to do and the most important thing to do. This will not only save lives but also protect the economy from collapse," he said.

Sunil Singh, chairperson of the National Council of Asian Indian Associations, said India was in dire need of treatment now. "We need injections now or not. India handled the first attack on COVID last year. It has helped 80 countries around the world," he said.

"Now India is in need, and the whole world has come forward to help India. We need more vaccines, and we need them now. Please help us now," he said, adding that civil society organizations in the Washington DC area sent 130 oxygen concentrators. .

Businessman Ravi Pulli, founder of the US-India Solidarity Council, has urged Biden officials to provide more assistance to India as he appreciates US support so far.

In its most recent renewal, the Union Department of Health has set the total number of COVID-19 cases in India at 2,54,96,330 and a death toll of 2,83,248. The department said there were 32,26,719 active cases, of which 2,19,86,363 people have so far recovered from the disease.
