Animal rights activists are blocking supplies at about 1,300 UK restaurants used by McDonald's Corp. in an effort to persuade the fast-food bully to accept a menu based entirely on plants.

About 50 Animal
activists protesters have shut down all four U.S. distribution centers, the organization said in a statement. Using trucks and bamboo structures, the group aims to protest in these areas for at least 24 hours, it said.

"McDonald's is just a symptom of a much bigger problem, the whole animal farming industry," according to Animal Rebellion. "These nationwide protests call on the animal husbandry industry to take part in the global climate crisis."

A spokesman for McDonald's said the company was "examining the impact on our food delivery and menu items."

Meat suppliers have faced increasing pressure from consumers and investors as scientists say the industry plays a major role in methane extraction and deforestation. Livestock farming accounts for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Animal Rebellion, a group affiliated with the weather organization Extinction Rebellion, has previously targeted offices linked to agrifood giant Cargill Inc. and the London meat market of Smithfield.

McDonald's chief executive Chris Kempczinski previously called plant-grown food "an ongoing consumer trend." The list of the world's largest restaurants, which distributes McPlant burger to other markets, also has a supply chain with Beyond Meat Inc., which makes plant-based meat ingredients.
