India is currently suffering through a second wave of the Pandemic. Nowadays, the biggest issue is not about how to treat but it’s about how can they avail the essential resources to treat (proper functioning of the ventilators and efficient oxygen supply). In many parts of the country, the deficiency of oxygen is witnessed at a wider range.

The rapid surge in the second wave of the virus witnessed many deficiencies in the functioning of the system as Jaipur Golden Hospital at Delhi recorded around 20 deaths due to oxygen unavailability whereas in Amritsar at Neelkantha Hospital 6 patients died due to the same reason. A day before Delhi Shri Gangaram hospital also witnessed the deaths of 25 severely ill patients due to lack of oxygen availability.

Is there an oxygen deficiency in the country?

India has transported around 9031 metric tons of oxygen in liquid form to the world between April 2020 to February 2021. During the first wave of the pandemic, the demand for the LMO (liquid medical oxygen) increases from 700 MT to 2800 MT but, it is also very simple for India to cope up with it.

The immense rise in the cases during the Second Wave of the Pandemic results in the excessive demand for the LMO risen to 5000 MTPD as the cases are creating a record with every passing day. With time, the need for oxygen availability raised as it witnessed a mammoth rise in the number of severe cases in the country.

The Central government said that India has a sufficient amount of oxygen in the country. There is no need to worry about the availability of oxygen as the country exports around 7000 metric tons per day but, the main issue is that the administration is not that efficient to cope up with the crises.

Many hospitals reported a lack of sufficient oxygen due to negligence at the level of administrative officers where oxygen is being delayed to reach the destination point.

What are the steps taken by the government to ensure the proper transportation of oxygen?

PM Modi conducted many meetings regarding the availability of oxygen and to overcome the obstructions from the path of oxygen supply. According to the sources, the central government guided the state governments to functionalize the movement of the oxygen cylinders and other essential medical resources to all over the country where the need is more.
Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated an oxygen plant in Gujarat recently whereas the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust is also planning to set up an oxygen plant at the Dashrath medical college in Ayodhya. It was said by the trustee Dr. Anil Mishra that the trust has decided to participate in the fight against the Pandemic by installing an oxygen plant. This plant will cost worth of 55 Lakh rupees.
Earlier, the Home Ministry issued a notification and declares that it is illegal to obstruct any vehicle carrying the oxygen supply to the hospitals which were highlighted when the Haryana state government allegedly stopped the vehicles carrying oxygen to Delhi through the territory of Haryana.

Thus, India is blessed with the nature of oxygen availability but due to lack of efficiency and strictness in the system, the cavalier behavior from the workers or officers side affects a lot in these types of circumstances. The basic cause is that Indians don’t even have time management and due to the negligence at these types of crucial circumstances many people sacrifice their life.
