EVMs, VVPATs found at TMC leader’s house in Uluberia North constituency, Sector Officer Suspended

In an incident last night, four Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and four VVPATs were found at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader's Uluberia North constituency heading to the polls on Tuesday, April. 6.

BJP candidate Chiran Bera said the EVMs were found in the house of TMC leader Gautam Ghosh in a house in Tulsiberia. He said the equipment had been brought to the electoral vehicle. The 'Sector 17' election official car was parked outside the TMC leader's house.

An official from the sector was caught red-handed by locals, however, saying that as it was late at night, the central forces were asleep and did not open the booth so they went to a relative's house to sleep which happened to be the TMC leader.

The police force that arrived in the area had to use lat-charge to disperse the crowd. EVMs and VVPATs were found by police and taken to a safe place.

The sector official was also suspended and four EVMs found in the area were reserved for EVMs and were banned from use. According to Electoral Commission (EC) sources, disciplinary action will be taken against the voting officials in the event of this expiration. Orders will be issued shortly. The Sector Police in conjunction with the Sector Council were also ordered to be suspended.

"Tapan Sarkar, a Section 17 official at AC 177 Uluberia Uttar in the Howrah region, went with the Reserve EVM to sleep at a relative's house.

Meanwhile, voting for the third round of West Bengal elections continues in 31 constituencies. Voting began at 7 a.m. on tight security. The EC has imposed restrictive orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in all regions, calling them 'critical'.
