82 killed in Baghdad hospital fire, says Iraq Interior Ministry

The Iraqi Interior Ministry said that on April 25, 82 people were killed and 110 injured when a blaze broke out at a Baghdad hospital.

Among the dead were at least 28 patients working on respiratory equipment to combat severe coronavirus symptoms, tweeted Ali al-Bayati, a spokesman for the country's independent Human Rights Commission.

The commission is a non-governmental organization.

The negligence on the part of hospital officials has been blamed for the blaze, which is the first of its kind reported to have been caused by the explosion of an oxygen cylinder in the intensive care unit at Ibn al-Khatib Hospital.

The hospital cares for patients with severe coronavirus symptoms. The Independent High Commission for Human Rights The Independent High Commission reported that at least 28 of the dead were on respirators.

The Iraqi prime minister fired key officials from hospitals on Sunday hours after a fire broke out.
