The 76th UN General Assembly held elections this Thursday for 18 new
members of the UN Human Rights Council who will serve for a period of
three years, starting in January 2022.
India has been re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council in 2022-24 on Thursday with a vast majority in the General Assembly, and the New Delhi delegation here described the election as "strongly in line" with the country's roots in democracy, democracy and fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.
The 76th UN General Assembly held Thursday's election of 18 new members of the UN Human Rights Council for a three-year term, starting in January 2022.
India received 184 votes in a 193-member meeting, with the required number of candidates being 97.
"I am very pleased with India's strong support for the Human Rights Council elections. It is a strong commitment to our strong roots in democracy, many rights and fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution. We thank all UN member states for giving us a strong mandate," TS Tirumurti told PTI.
India's Permanent Mission to the UN wrote on Twitter that "India is being re-elected to @UN_HRC (2022-24) for the sixth time. Heartfelt thanks to @UN's membership for renewing its faith in India."
India's current term was due to end on December 31 2021. In the 2022-2024 term elections, there were five vacant seats in the Asia-Pacific States - India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The Indian Party has congratulated other UN member states on their election to the Human Rights Council, which has 47 member states directly and voted in a secret ballot by a majority of members of the General Assembly.
Council members will serve for a term of three years and will not be eligible for re-election immediately after two consecutive terms.

Membership is based on the equitable distribution of territories, and seats are still distributed among the Group of African States (13), Group of Asia-Pacific States (13), Group of Eastern Europe States (6), Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (8) and Western Group Europe and other Countries (7).
From January 2021, 119 of the 193 member states of the UN will be active as members of the HRC. "Comprehensive membership not only reflects the diversity of the UN, but also empowers the Council when it comes to human rights abuses in all countries," the UN said.
In 2018, the US under the administration of Donald Trump withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. U.S. Ambassador to the United States Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Washington's election to the Council "has fulfilled President Biden's promise to rejoin the Human Rights Council" and that the US "will work to ensure that the organization adheres to these principles."
"Our first efforts as full-time members of the Council will focus on what we can achieve in areas of greater need, such as Afghanistan, Burma, China, Ethiopia, Syria, and Yemen. and discrimination against members of minority groups, including LGBTQI + people and people with disabilities, "said Thomas-Greenfield.
