Xiaomi’s sales grew 26% on-month, giving the company a 17.1% share of the total number of smartphones sold globally in June, Counterpoint Research said. For the quarter that ended in June, Xiaomi was the second-largest smartphone maker by shipment — trailing Samsung Counterpoint analysts said the trend could be temporary as a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases in Vietnam likely disrupted Samsung’s production that month.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi sold more phones in June than its rivals Samsung and Apple, according to research firm Counterpoint.
Xiaomi's sales have grown by 26% compared to last month, giving the company 17.1% of the total number of smartphones sold worldwide in June, Compterpoint said in a note on Thursday. He also added that Samsung and Apple sold 15.7% and 14.3% of total handsets at the same time, respectively.
In the last quarter of June, Xiaomi was the second largest smartphone manufacturer by shipment - following Samsung.
Counterpoint analysts have suggested that the trend could be temporary as a new explosion of Covid-19 cases in Vietnam is likely to disrupt Samsung's production in June. This has led to a shortage of available devices from a South Korean smartphone maker, the note said.
Samsung noted production disruptions in Vietnam due to the closure of the facility during their bid for the second quarter. The smartphone chief reportedly expects the product to return to normal levels soon.
"Since the start of Huawei's decline, Xiaomi has been making consistent and violent efforts to close the gap created by this decline," Tarun Pathak, director of research at Counterpoint, said in a statement. He also added that Xiaomi has been expanding to Huawei's stock markets such as China, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
In fact, a study from Strategy Analytics this month found that Xiaomi was the top smartphone brand in Europe in the three months between April and June, holding about 25% of the market share.
Xiaomi remains a leading player in India - one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world.
While many of Xiaomi's phones are still targeted at a major market, the Chinese smartphone maker is pushing for a high-end category - currently controlled by premium devices from Samsung and Apple.
This year, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 11 Ultra smartphone with an initial price of 5,999 yuan ($ 928) and its first folding phone with a price tag of 9,999 yuan.
Samsung is expected to launch the latest high-end smartphones next week at its Galaxy Unpacked event. Apple is also expected to announce its next iPhone model in September.
