The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said research into a combination of two COVID vaccines - Covaxin and Covishield - showed better results.
Vaccination with a combination of a vaccine based on the adenovirus platform followed by an ineffective vaccine was not only safe but also promoted better immunity, the study said.
Last month, an expert panel of India's drug regulator, DCGI, recommended that research be done on a combination of Covishield and Covaxin vaccines.
The recommendation came after Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore sought permission to conduct the study.(ads2)
The Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) said the aim of the study was to determine whether a person could be given two different vaccines - one Covishield and Coxinxin - to complete vaccination studies.
"The SEC (committee of academic experts) after detailed discussions recommended that CMC be given permission, Vellore to conduct a phase 4 clinical trial comprising 300 healthy volunteers to mix COVID-19 Covaxin and Covishield vaccines," the source said.
