Rescuers have worked hard to control or minimize the damage revealed by the floods on Saturday as the death toll from the deadly floods in Western Europe has risen to 168.
The death toll in western Germany in the Rhineland-Palatinate province, home to the worst-hit district of Ahrweiler, has risen to 98.
Another 43 people have been confirmed dead in neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia. The Belgian Center for Human Rights said the country's death toll had risen to 27.
On Saturday, authorities feared the death toll could rise as floodwaters reduced access to many affected areas and revealed the extent of the damage.
"Many people have lost everything they spent their lives building - their property, their home, their roofs," German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during a visit to the city of Erftstadt. "It may be clear in the churches how much damage is in need of compensation."

Across the border in eastern Belgium, the railway line and roads remained closed in many places. Parts of the south of the Netherlands were also hit by major floods.
In Switzerland, heavy rains have caused several rivers and lakes to burst, and Lucerne city authorities are closing several pedestrian bridges over the Reuss River.
