Sri Lanka witnessed an heavy rainfall around 14 people have been killed and 2,45,000 affected, according to authorities. Out of the 14 killed, five people were reported dead from Kegalle, 88 kilometers from the capital Colombo, while three people were reported dead in Ratnapura district, reported the authorities. Two people were reported missing and two others were injured.
According to DMC figures, 15,658 people were evacuated to safer areas, while more than 800 houses were damaged. The Sri Lankan Department of Environment, in its latest weather report, said a severe fall of 150 mm could be expected in the coming days and the public was urged to be especially vigilant when heavy lightning strikes.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy said that following the emerging concerns, there was no threat of a furnace oil from the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery tanks mixed with the Kelani River on the outskirts of Colombo. Tank-containing oil tanks at an oil refinery were flooded following heavy rains on Saturday. Due to the inclement weather, the Department of Health said the COVID-19 vaccine program was also reversed.
Deputy Director-General of Health Services Hemantha Herath told reporters that although the roll-out of vaccinations in the districts had not been stopped, officials were still unable to do 100 percent due to heavy rainfall.
