United Nations:India has abstained from the UN General Assembly's decision on Myanmar, saying its views were not reflected in the framework and that New Delhi does not believe the resolution, immediately introduced, is ready to "assist our collective efforts in strengthening the democratic process" in the country.

UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the 'Status in Myanmar' 'on Friday in which 119 member states voted in favor of, including Myanmar, while 36 countries did not agree, including Myanmar's neighbors - India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Laos, Nepal and Thailand. Russia has not given up either.

Belarus was the only country that voted.

"This resolution has been presented to the UN General Assembly as soon as possible without adequate consultation with neighbors and regional states. This is not only helpful but may also indicate opposition to ASEAN's efforts to find a solution to the current situation in Myanmar," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador -TS Tirumurti told PTI.

In a vote statement in the General Assembly hall, Tirumurti said that as a neighbor of Myanmar and a close friend of its people, India was aware of the "significant impact of political instability" and its explosive power beyond Myanmar's borders.

India has been demanding greater involvement with a view to resolving all issues amicably.

"We already have this ongoing program under ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations). It is important that we support ASEAN's efforts," said Mr Tirumurti.

"At the time of the decision, we were in the process of finding a way to build a constructive and progressive approach and to share our recommendations with those who tested the decision," he said.

"However, we find that our views have not been reflected in the framework under consideration today. We would like to reiterate that a constructive dialogue involving neighboring countries and the region is still important as the international community strives for peace to resolve this issue," Mr Tirumurti said.

He stressed that the fact that there is a lack of support from all neighboring countries and other countries in the region itself "should, hopefully, serve as an eye opener for those who choose to follow the chase process.

"Therefore, we do not believe that the introduction of this recognition resolution at this time, helps to support our collective efforts to strengthen the democratic process in Myanmar. We are therefore compelled not to accept it," Mr Tirumurti said.

The decision raised serious concerns during the February 1 coup and called on the Myanmar military to release President Win Myint, State Counsel Aung San Suu Kyi, and other government officials, politicians, and those detained or detained.

It also called on "all Member States to prevent the entry of arms into Myanmar".

The decision called on Myanmar's armed forces to end the crisis and to respect the human rights of all citizens of the country.

It also called on Myanmar to allow the ongoing democratic transformation, "including the opening of a democratically elected parliament and working to bring all national institutions, including the armed forces, under a fully inclusive democratic government."

He expressed concern about the human rights situation of people of race, religion and other minorities in Myanmar, "including minority Rohingya Muslims, especially in relation to the violations committed against them and their rights related to citizenship."
