'If pizza can be delivered why not ration?': Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to Centre
CM Kejriwal also noted that these stores have the potential to become a Covid hotspot. "Please have my hands folded at the Center, please allow us to hand out the assignments to the residents of Delhi," the prime minister said.
The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, on Sunday asked the Center why it was setting up its department to bring the program to the national capital, which he said would help the poor. "Two days before the launch of the 'Doorstep Delivery of Ration' program in Delhi, the central government suspended it. If pizza delivery is not allowed in the middle of Covid-19, why not agree?" CM Kejriwal asked.
"We are doing this to help those in need," said Kejriwal; he added that it would help people who are hesitant to go shopping because of the ongoing epidemic. "" This program would help the owners of 72 lakh share cards in the national capital, "he said.
He also pointed out that these stores have the potential to become a Covid hotspot. "Please have my hands folded at the Center, please allow us to hand out the assignments to the residents of Delhi," the prime minister said.
The leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also denied allegations that the Delhi government did not seek permission from the institution for the program. "We did not take the accreditation only once, but five times. Legally, we do not need the approval of the Center but we did it out of respect," he said. He further added that the agency took the decision under the influence of the "ration mafia."
On Saturday, the Delhi government said it was ready to hand over the door within days and that Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had returned a file on June 2 stating that the plan could not be implemented. However, the institute said the file had been returned for "reconsideration" and described the allegations as baseless, PTI media quoted the official as saying.
Under the proposed plan, the Delhi government has promised to provide 4kg of flour and 1kg of refined rice and packed at the door for all beneficiaries. Earlier the name of the scheme was 'Mukhyamantri Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana', but it was withdrawn by the Delhi government over an objection raised by the Institute.
"We are not doing this because of debt," said CM Kejriwal. "Have one goal, that is to provide for the poor ... There should be no politics about things that affect the country," he added.
"Let me start this program, I will give you (PM Modi) a full credit. The rate is not for the state, for the people," said CM Kejriwal.
