Iran has failed to explain traces of uranium found in many undisclosed locations, a UN nuclear agency report showed on Monday, potentially sparking a new conflict between Tehran and the West that could disrupt extensive nuclear talks.
Three months ago Britain, France and Germany withdrew a U.S.-backed program. Of the International Atomic Energy Agency 35 Board of Governors to criticize Iran for failing to fully explain the origin of these particles; all three retreated as IAEA boss Rafael Grossi announced new talks with Iran.
"After several months, Iran has not yet provided the necessary explanation for the presence of nuclear material in any of the three areas where the Agency has made concurrent access (testing)," Grossi's report to member states identified by Reuters.
"The Director General is concerned that the technical discussions between the Agency and Iran have not yielded the expected results," the report stated.
It will now be up to the three European powers to decide whether to renew their decision-making campaigns against Iran, which could jeopardize the wider negotiations to renew the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in the ongoing negotiations in Vienna. Grossi hoped to report on progress before the board met again next week.
