Chinese hackers target Russian government websites, try to steal confidential data

Moscow, Chinese hackers have targeted Russian government websites.

The software was used to hack the websites of Russian government agencies with the aim of stealing confidential government data, according to a report.

The report by US company Sentinelvan is based on a report released last month by the Federal Security Service (FSB), one of Russia's leading spy agencies, and the cyber unit of telecom firm Rostelecom.

The report said how ThunderCats (the name of a hacker group linked to China) hacked the websites of Russian government agencies.  Experts at US company Sentinelvan said the hacking tool used to attack Russian agencies is linked to a broader group of suspected Chinese spies who have also targeted Asian governments in recent years.

Experts have come to the conclusion that hackers in China have developed a software called Mail-O, which is a downloader program.

The experts in the report mentioned that the current cyber attack is unique and is being assessed by experts as a threat at the federal level. Those who did this used the latest software.

Not only this, hackers used many types of attacks simultaneously.

Such as phishing, exploiting web vulnerabilities and attacks through contractors.

Last year, US officials publicly disclosed a suspected Chinese hacking campaign that targeted entities in Russia and other former Soviet republics.
