Sales of Tesla's new model in the Chinese market lost smoke in April, according to data from China's Passenger Car Association.

The budget Winging Hongguang Mini EV took its place in April as China's best-selling power car, the organization said on Wednesday.

Tesla's Model 3 is ranked second, followed by the BYD "Han" sedan.

But Tesla's Model Y, which was unveiled to customers in China in January, fell to sixth place, dropping from third at the beginning of the year, data showed.

Elon Musk's automaker has faced increasing scrutiny from regulators in China, with growing media reports of brake failure, crashes and explosions.

The launch of China's electric car Li Auto has sold its SUV - which comes with a fuel tank to extend the driving battery - than Tesla's Model Y in April, according to a report.

However, the launch of China’s electric car Nio’s ES6 is ranked even lower, in 13th place. The company said the global chip shortage would affect its delivery in the second quarter.

The U.S.-ranked S7 sedan ranked in the U.S. ranked 14th, the organization said. Some in the industry have questioned the accuracy of the association's statistics.
