Pakistan will not provide, military bases to US for operations in Afghanistan: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Tuesday said in the Senate that Pakistan would not provide its military bases and air space to the United States to fight against terrorism in Afghanistan and would not allow drone attacks from within Pakistan.

The foreign minister also dismissed false reports of US supplies, facilities in Pakistan, making it clear that Prime Minister Imran Khan would never supply their facilities in the United States, and would not allow drone attacks inside Pakistan, reports The News International.

"I want to assure the House that Pakistan is in safe hands," he said.

This comes after a Pentagon official said Pakistan had allowed American troops to use their space and provided land access to support their presence in Afghanistan.

Responding to the manager's complaints, Qureshi said, "Because of what we have been afraid and afraid of and we are concerned that the space created in Afghanistan could drag or suck the country back in the 1990s".

Qureshi argued that as the United States plans to withdraw its remaining troops from Afghanistan on September 11, Pakistan will continue to play its part in advancing the country's peace process, reports The News International.

Mian Raza Rabbani, former Speaker of the Senate, also said Pakistan should not allow the United States to use its air and ground facilities to operate in Afghanistan and an international process to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Meanwhile, media outlets in Washington told Dawn that Pakistan has always allowed flights and land access to the US to make military presence in Afghanistan and will continue to do so.
