President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday issued a proclamation amending the Nepali Citizenship Act, reports The Himalayan Times.

The Presidency said in a statement issued yesterday that the President had issued a Nepali Citizens' Law (the first amendment) in accordance with Article 114 (1) of the Nepal Constitution.

Following the enactment of this law, citizenship by birth will be provided for descendants of Nepali citizens, who own the citizenship by birthright. Similarly, legally, children whose mothers are citizens of Nepal but whose identity documents cannot be disclosed, will be granted Nepali citizenship.

The amendment of the citizenship law is one of the stages introduced by Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato of the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal to give their support to Prime Minister Oli.

The bill was debated in the House of Representatives two years ago but was not approved due to disputes between the parties, The Himalayan Times reported.

Earlier on Saturday, the Presidency issued a proclamation announcing the second demolition of the house in terms of Article 76 (7) of Nepal's Constitution, on Cabinet recommendation. The next election will be on November 12 and 19 as per Cabinet recommendation.
