Fugitive Businessman Mehul Choksi, wanted in a ₹13,5000-crore loan fraud in Punjab National Bank, has suddenly gone missing in Antigua and Barbuda where he had been staying since January 2018, the Royal Police Force of the Caribbean island nation said in a statement. The police force, which has launched a missing person operation, has released a statement and a photo of the businessman seeking information from the public. "Police are investigating a missing report from Mehul Choksi, 62, of Jolly Harbor. Mehul was reported missing on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Johnson Point Police Station," the statement said.

Choksi was last seen on Sunday in his car which was found by police following a search but could not be found, he said.

"Antiguanewsroom", a media outlet, quoted Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney on Tuesday as saying police were "following the trail of Indian businessman Mehul Choksi", who was "rumored" to be missing.

According to media reports, Choksi, a former Caribbean nationalist named Antigua and Barbuda, was seen driving to the southern part of the island on Sunday.

Choksi's lawyer Vijay Aggarwal confirmed the reports.

Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted for allegedly withdrawing 13,500 crore from public funds from the state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB), using letters of commitment.

While Modi was in a London jail after being denied bail against extradition to India, Choksi had seized the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 through the Citizenship by Investment program, before fleeing to India in the first week of January 2018. The scandal came to light later.

Both are under investigation by the CBI.
