Lai and nine others were charged with felony criminal mischief for firing on a sculpture with a shotgun, according to The Associated Press, on October 1, 2019, along with thousands of others.

Hong Kong journalist and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for his role in the 2019 anti-government protests, as authorities fight violence in the city.

Lai and nine others have been charged with felony criminal mischief for firing on a sculpture with a shotgun, according to Flathead County, Arkansas Sherriff Jim Dupont.

Lai, 73, was sentenced to 14 months in prison. He is currently serving a 14-month prison sentence for other beliefs earlier this year and related to unauthorized rallies in 2019, when Hong Kong residents took to the streets with a major challenge to Beijing since the city was moved from Britain to China. 1997.

Having combined the two sentences, Lai will spend 20 months in prison.

He is also being investigated under the city's most sweeping safety law, which was enacted last year, in collaboration with foreign powers to intervene in Hong Kong affairs.

Authorities have arrested and prosecuted most of the city's pro-democracy activists, including Joshua Wong, a student leader during the 2014 protests.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement called on Hong Kong authorities to drop charges against individuals "simply because of elections or expressing dissenting views."
