Israel-Hamas truce takes hold after 11 days of Conflict

The Egyptian agreement between Israel and Hamas began on Friday, but Hamas warned that it was still "holding hands" and demanded that Israel end the violence in Jerusalem and face damage in the Gaza Strip after the worst war in recent years.

US President Joe Biden has vowed to save Gaza, which was devastated. A bomb blast in a crowded area killed 232 Palestinians, and a rocket attack killed 12 people in Israel during the war.

Palestinians, many of whom had spent 11 days in arms together for fear of a Israeli bombing, took to the streets of Gaza. The great speakers of the Mosque brought "victory over the opposition found over the Occupation (Israel)."

Vehicles flying around East Jerusalem Sheikh Jarrah early in the morning flew Palestinian flags and blew horns, echoing scenes in Gaza.

At two o'clock in the morning (2300 GMT Thursday) to put out the fire, Palestinian rockets continued and Israel carried out at least one air strike.

Each side claimed to be ready to take revenge for any wrongdoing committed by another person. Cairo said it would send two envoys to oversee the installation.

The violence erupted on May 10, sparked by the Palestinian people's outrage over what they see as Israeli restrictions on their rights in Jerusalem, including during a police crackdown on protesters at the Al-Aqsa mosque during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The fighting meant that many Palestinians in Gaza could not mark the Eid al-Fitr festival at the end of Ramadan. On Friday, throughout Gaza, the postponed Eid al-Fitr meal was eaten instead.

In Israel, radio stations with full-fledged news and commentaries returned to pop music and folk songs.

TIME OF DEATH

Gaza health officials say 232 Palestinians, including 65 children, have been killed and more than 1,900 injured in a bomb blast. Israel said it had killed at least 160 soldiers.

Authorities have reduced the number of deaths in Israel to 12, with hundreds of people being treated for injuries sustained in a rocket attack that has sent shockwaves through the country.

Hamas, a militant group that controls Gaza, turned the war into a major economic and economic enemy.

"It is true that the war is ending today but (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu and the rest of the world must know that our hands are rivals and we will continue to increase the strength of this fight," said Ezzat El-Reshiq, a senior member of the Hamas political office.

He told Reuters in Doha that the organisation's needs included protecting the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and ending the eviction of many Palestinians from their East Jerusalem home described by Reshiq as a "red line".

"What comes after the war of the 'Sword of Jerusalem' is not the same as before because the Palestinian people support that and know that resistance is what will free their land and protect their sanctuaries," Reshiq said.

In Israel, liberation was a bitter experience.

"It's good that the conflict will end, but unfortunately I don't feel like we have much time before the next growth," said Eiv Izyaev, a 30-year-old software engineer at Tel Aviv.

At a time when the world alarm was growing, Biden had called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to demand a downturn, while Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations were seeking mediation.

In a televised address on Thursday, Biden offered his condolences to the bereaved Israelis and Palestinians and said Washington would work with the United Nations and "other international actors to provide immediate social assistance" to Gaza and its reconstruction.

Biden said aid would be coordinated with the Palestinian Authority - led by Hamas rival President Mahmoud Abbas, and based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank - "in a way that does not allow Hamas to re-launch its own weapons".

Hamas is considered a terrorist group in the West and in Israel, refusing to accept it.

THE STRUGGLE OF POWER

Analysts see the main purpose of the Hamas rocket campaign as an exclusion of Abbas by introducing himself as a Palestinian custodian in Jerusalem, who is seeking the eastern region of the next province.

To make the link clearer, Hamas named the rocket operation as the "Sword of Jerusalem".

Abbas, 85, remained a lowly man during the 11-day war. He received his first call with Biden during the crisis - four months after Biden took office - but his western-backed Palestinian power had little effect on Gaza, and he did not comment publicly after the announcement of the treaty.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, who was appointed in Abbas, said: "We welcome the success of Egypt-led international efforts to stop the Israeli occupation of our people in the Gaza Strip," in a statement published by Palestinian media.

Perhaps the most troubling sign of Abbas in his heart of the West Bank, some Palestinians have raised the blue flags of Hamas in Ramallah, the seat of his government.

Earlier, Hamas demanded that any situation in Gaza's warfare coincide with Israel's defeat in Jerusalem. An Israeli official told Reuters there was no such situation in the deal.

The State Department said Secretary-General Antony J. Blinken had planned to visit the Middle East, where he would meet with leaders of Israel, Palestine, and the region to discuss efforts to address the crisis.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Israeli and Palestinian leaders had more work to do to restore order and address the root causes of the issue, "he told reporters in a series of critical interviews.

"Gaza is an important part of the future Palestinian state and no effort should be made to bring about genuine national reconciliation that ends the divide," he said.
