U.S. President Joe Biden has announced his intention to appoint Indian and American business expert Arun Venkataraman to a leading position in his foreign trade administration.

Venkataraman has been appointed US Director-General of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs and Assistant Secretary of State for Market Markets, the White House said on Wednesday.

With more than 20 years of experience advising companies, international organizations and the US government on international trade issues, Venkataraman is currently a Business Adviser, advising the department on trade and other global economic issues.

Prior to joining the Biden-Harris administration, he was the executive director of Visa, leading a strategy to engage the general government on a wide range of international policy issues including digital economics, trade, taxation and sanctions.

Venkataraman previously worked as a trade and investment policy advisor at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he advised multinational corporations and organizations on e-commerce, intellectual property rights, and American and foreign trade policies.

As the first policy director at the Department of International Trade and Industry under President Barack Obama, Venkataraman helped shape the US government's response to the challenges facing local and international firms, including China and India, White House said.

While in the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), he led the development and implementation of US-India trade policy as Director of India, where he received the Kelly Award of the organization for outstanding performance and exceptional leadership.

Venkataraman also served as an attorney general, representing the United States in cases before the World Trade Organization (WTO) and in negotiations on international trade agreements.

Prior to joining the USTR, Venkataraman was the WTO's legal officer, advising the organization on various issues raised in the dispute between countries.

He began his career as a legal secretary for Judge Jane A Restani in the US International Court of Justice. He holds a JD from Columbia Law School, a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a BA from Tufts University.
