New Delhi: The government has approved the opening of a new consulate in the city of Addu this year to boost India's diplomatic presence in the Maldives.
The decision to open the first consulate in the Maldives comes amid continued efforts to increase China's influence in the Maldives.

"The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the opening of a new Consulate General of India in the city of Addu in Maldives in 2021," the official statement released on Tuesday said.
It states that this country (Maldives) has an important place in India's 'neighborhood first' policy.
