150 students kidnapped after attack from Islamic school by armed bandits in Nigeria

One person was killed and several others were injured when unknown gunmen abducted about 150 children from a Nigerian Islamic school in Niger.

Salihu Tanko Islamic School is located in Tegina in the Rafi Local Government Area in north-central Niger.

According to sources, the abduction took place at 4:30 pm (local time) on Sunday.

State police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said armed robbers arrived with motorcycles and fired shots "indiscriminately".

Security teams have been formed to rescue school children and the police will "ensure that children are rescued unharmed," he said.

Armed gangs have been the target of kidnappings for colleges and educational institutions in northern Nigeria in recent months, kidnapping more than 700 young people since December.

According to a human rights group, Nigerian security officials have failed to develop a strategy to protect their school children and college students and their access to education even after seven years of 'most kidnapped Chibok girls' abductions', in which 279 girls from the northern Nigerian school were abducted by terrorists.

On April 14, 2014, the Boko Haram militant group abducted 279 schoolgirls in Chibok, a town in Borno state. Most of them managed to escape or were eventually released.

In recent years in Nigeria, criminal gangs have demanded a large amount of ransom to increase their attacks and mass kidnappings, often targeting residential schools outside the cities and towns.
